It seems to be easier to clean up the Vatican bank than to establish a policy of zero tolerance of the mishandling of cases of sex abuse by Catholic priests. Pope Francis has created a special tribunal (within the Congregation for the Doctrine of Faith, the CDF) to investigate and sentence bishops found guilty of gross negligence in dealing with complaints of sex abuse. Knowing that there is an institution in Rome dedicated to examine cases of “abuse of office by bishops”, including the covering up of abuse or the failure to investigate allegations, will increase the confidence of survivors in the system and will help them to get justice.
