Letter from Rome

Has the countdown to the end of the Bergoglio papacy begun? The faithful of the Regina Pacis parish in Ostia, the beach town near Rome which is part of the Pope’s diocese, were surprised when last Sunday he talked to them about his “illness”. Francis had visited the parish, where he celebrated Mass. Speaking to a group of sick and elderly people as he was leaving, he said as usual: “Pray for me”. But then suddenly he added: “I am a little bit old, a little bit ill … but, hey, not too much!”Francis speaks frankly and never makes jokes about resignation or ill health.
