Time magazine’s selection of Pope Francis as its “Person of the Year” seemed to be a foregone conclusion to many. “It is not surprising, given the vast resonance and attention surrounding his election and the beginning of the new pontificate,” said Vatican spokesman, Fr Federico Lombardi SJ. “It’s a positive sign that one of the most prestigious honours from the international press should go to someone who proclaims spiritual, religious and moral values to the world and speaks effectively in favour of peace and greater justice.”Fr Lombardi added that Francis “does not seek fame or success”, but only to “proclaim the Gospel of God’s love for all people” and give them hope.
