In 1983, Julian Borger’s father, Robert, was found dead in the National Liberal Club, a club he had joined expressedly as a place to commit suicide. It was the end of a life that began in Vienna and led, via a dramatic flight from Nazi-occupied Austria, to a university teaching career in England.
