Frost in May author Antonia White's struggle with the 'beast' of mental illness


 

The Catholic novelist Antonia White became known for her party turn playing the Game of Truth. She played an extraordinary winning hand: “Within 10 years, I have had three marriages, two annulments and one certificate of virginity from the Pope.” There was no requirement to add that spouse number one was alcoholic and impotent; number two homosexual; or that it was the first annulment that invoked the physical ­examination (two doctors present) which pronounced White virgo intacta.
