Ten years ago, a 23-year-old named Francisco Cantú was hired by the United States Border Patrol as a field agent. As he recounts in his memoir, The Line Becomes a River, his mother was not pleased. Her father was Mexican, and if he tried to cross into the US today, as he did decades ago, in search of a better life, the patrol would rebuff him.
