It is heartening to see the influence of Catholic Social Teaching ripple across faith and non-faith communities. In recent years, proponents of this rich tradition have informed the moderate left strand of Labour thinking described as “Blue Labour”, and now we have a contribution to the debate from the Archbishop of Canterbury, Justin Welby. His highly ambitious work, which draws extensively on Catholic Social Teaching, attempts to “reimagine” Britain in a post-Brexit world, arguing that now is the time for a deliberate “reshaping of national purpose”, as happened in 1945.
