This Valentine’s Day special from the BBC World Service (14 February) found Simon Maybin travelling across continents to explore what he called “the dating apocalypse” – that is, the allegedly revolutionary effect of technology on the contemporary relationship. Maybin’s first stop was an evening with 24-year-old New Yorker Whitney, who confessed of her “OK Cupid” app that “your life just kinda revolves around it”. Whitney, exhausted from scrolling through the 68 matches recently offered to her, was off to meet a man who, mysteriously, had deleted his profile from the site on receipt of her agreement to meet.
