The bus drivers brought together in Bus Lines (14 January) turned out to have more in common than the matter of their employment. For a start there was the pleasure they took in their jobs, valued for the chance to meet people, and, in certain circumstances, become involved in their lives. Then there was their comparative lack of education: David from Glasgow had left school at 15; Andrew from Llanelli joined the Welsh Guards at 16. Finally, and most important of all, they were all aspiring writers.Unusually, the encouragement that had sent them on their way had come from their employer – in this case First Bus, which in consultation with its trade union had initiated a series of learning centres and then looked about for a way of getting the employees to engage with the process wit
