Historians are divided about the old Bedlam, the famous lunatic asylum. They know the public were allowed to gawp at the lunatics. They’re just not sure whether they were charged a penny for the privilege. We’ve moved on since then. Nowadays it’s free. And you get much better access. Have you seen Bedlam (31 October)? No, you really should. They take you to the current Bethlem Hospital and let you see the patients, in a thought-provoking way. This week’s malady was obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD), which makes patients behave very weirdly and puts their friends and families through hell.
