Beyond the Fringe


 
At its best, the Edinburgh Fringe offers more opportunities for bad behaviour than an Open University summer school. At its worst, it can be deadly serious. This year’s pop-up theme of mental health – and it’s remarkable how consensual Fringe programming can seem even in social media times – offered some moments of wit and lightness but it was more often issues-driven and worthy. The whole point of an Edinburgh August, particularly knowing how raw and unforgiving an Edinburgh September can be, is to stick a pin into the map of venues and hope for some fun.Which is how I ended up at a drag show. Having trawled the book for Tablet-appropriate subject matter, and having largely failed, I rocked up at Evolution of the Fags. It was brassy, vulgar and completely unapolog
