Sitting on a bar stool, urbane, sharp-suited, a cigarette in one hand and a whisky (in reality ginger ale) in the other, Dave Allen was an after-hours kind of comedian. His jokes about the Catholicism in which he was raised and at religion in general earned him the reputation in some circles as a blaspheming provocateur.
