The living Spirit and liturgical calendar


 

The gospels are agreed that although the resurrection ought to be the most sublime display of divine power, it is not used to that effect. Jesus appears only to those who had known him before death, and only to those who had begun to hope and trust in him already. He does not confront those who put him to death, or make himself manifest to the wider world. Even his disciples do not always recognise him. This shockingly new life is still hidden, still available only as part of a relationship with Jesus, in his humanity, his suffering and his death. It obstinately refuses to be separated from that framework of explanation.
