Nearly 2,000 Catholics have taken part in a Catholic Union survey or letter-writing campaign in the last year, according to the Catholic Union of Great Britain’s annual report.

Between August 2022 and July 2023, members addressed mainstream media on topics including moves to legalise Euthanasia, Catholic education and faith-based discrimination in the workplace.

The Catholic Union, which represents the Catholic faith in the public square, briefs media and politicians on the Catholic viewpoint on contemporary issues, including its campaign in partnership with the Catholic Education Service to “scrap the cap” on the numbers of free faith schools.

The union helped organise a visit by Bishop Robert Barron of Winona-Rochester to No 10 Downing Street and also to Westminster when he visited England in February.

The union also arranged via the All-Party Parliamentary Group on the Holy See for Chris Trott, the UK ambassador to the Holy See and Bishop Kenneth Nowakowski, leader of England’s Ukrainian Catholic Community to visit parliament.

In 2023, the Union launched a series of “pub talks” near Westminster Cathedral where public figures, including to date Lord Alton, Ruth Kelly and Ann Widdecombe have spoken of their faith and life in the public sphere.

Members have also attended webinars which in the past year included discussions of the Synod on Synodality and “God in No 10 – the Personal Faith of the 20th century Prime Ministers”.

In an introduction to the report, Cardinal Vincent Nichols, the Archbishop of Westminster said: “The central mission of the Catholic Union to be a witness to our faith in the public sphere and promote the common good is deeply needed.”
