A group of MPs and peers from across the political spectrum have joined together to share a “message of hope” on the Parliament YouTube channel to coincide with the start of Parliament’s Easter recess. The MPs read a variety of passages from the gospels of Mark, Luke and John, telling the Easter story beginning with the crucifixion and concluding with the resurrection.

Sir Gary Streeter MP, Chair of the Christians in Parliament All Party Parliamentary Group, said: “The past year has been extremely tough and as politicians we are seeking to do all we can to ensure that Parliament and Government enable the country to recover from this crisis. However, in the Gospel accounts of the first Easter, there is a message of hope that goes deeper than politics and we wanted to share that this Easter.”

The Rev Baroness Sherlock, Vice Chair, said: “After a few years which have seen deep divisions not just in Parliament but across our nation, we are coming together at Easter to offer a message of renewed hope. As Christians serving in Parliament we may disagree on many things but we are all united in the belief that the Easter story is good news for everyone.”

The message involves MPs and peers from Labour, the Liberal Democrats and the Conservative party, as well as Ian Paisley of the DUP and cross-bench peers. Many notable parliamentarians participated including Labour Peer Lord Boateng, Britain’s first black government minister, and a Methodist lay preacher; Baroness Morgan of Cotes, the former Conservative Secretary of State for Education; MP Marsha de Cordova who serves as Labour’s Shadow Secretary of State for Women and Equalities; and former Lib Dem leader Tim Farron.

The video concludes with Christ’s words to doubting Thomas and the disciples: “Then Jesus told him, “because you have seen me, you have believed; blessed are those who have not seen me and yet have believed.”
