The closure of Heythrop College (“A Jesuit light goes out in London”, 4 July) is a tragedy. The achievements of the college should not be lost to theological and philosophical discourse in this country. I have just submitted my dissertation for my second Masters degree, and am deeply grateful to the staff and other students who have made my years at Heythrop challenging, academically rigorous, thought-provoking and enjoyable. The Church in this country needs educated lay people; how can we afford to lose Heythrop, and yet be talking about the continuation of the Bellarmine Institute to educate priests and other Jesuits.
