The Irish vote and the quest for true love

Fr Gabriel Daly quotes with approval Archbishop Martin's remark after the Irish referendum on gay marriage, to the effect that the Church's teaching needs to be expressed in terms of love, before adding his own comment "Tell that to the Roman curia!" (The Tablet, 30 May).

Any member of the Roman curia in need of instruction in the Church's teaching on love could turn to Deus Caritas est, the first encyclical written and issued by Benedict XVI. Perhaps Fr Daly might turn his attention to the document also.

Linda Hogan sees a false dichotomy between the "sexual practices of the partners" and the "quality of the relationships". Since we are all sexed beings, all of our relationships are intrinsically and unavoidably sexual. Our every encounter with each other has therefore a moral dimension which provides a moral challenge: to what extent, in my behaviour, am I respecting my God-given gifts as a person – physical, social, intellectual, affective – and those of the other person involved? Whatever our sexual orientation we must recognise that, in exercising our sexuality, God is intimately involved.
Peter Simmons, North Berwick

While the Spirit may or may not have spoken in the Irish Referendum on same-sex marriage, something else did speak loudly, namely several million US dollars poured into the “Yes” campaign. Money speaks.
