Hope through ecumenism in Egypt

The article by Jayson Casper (13 December) on “The Egyptian Family House” is very good news about growing respect and friendship between leaders of faiths and Churches across the country.

During several visits to Egypt since 2010 I heard no mention of this most desirable movement, although my friends and I met the Orthodox Pope and the Grand Sheikh of Al Azhar. Perhaps discretion was essential until the movement became well-established. I trust that it will go from strength to strength and above all that it will more and more include the laity. Egypt has major problems of illiteracy, poverty and unemployment, especially among the ever-growing youth population. These can best be tackled in non-sectarian and cooperative ways in what is the largest of the Arab countries.
