Succession planning


 
I agree with Catherine Pepinster (26 April) that David Moyes never stood a chance of succeeding at Manchester United. But I believe she is wrong to see Alex Ferguson’s past achievements and looming presence as the reason for Moyes’ failure – it might have been a contributory factor. Quite simply, Moyes was not up to the job. The true and inexcusable failure, as is often the case, was in the selection process itself. If José Mourinho or the former Barcelona coach Pep Guardiola had been appointed, the outcome would have been very different indeed.All too often, those charged with appointing replacements lack the vision to see beyond the present. There will always be the timorous tendency to replace like with like. Pope Francis is a success because he is different. H
