Your excerpt from Cardinal Kasper’s gospel of the family (5 April) gives a good review of biblical ideas of marriage. But, Cardinal Kasper notes, “The gospel of marriage and the family is no longer intelligible to many.” This is certainly true in the United States, where many civil jurisdictions allow people who barely know each other to wed and get a divorce in a few weeks. Moreover, the bad example of movie stars, athletes and business leaders “working on” their fourth marriage or living together despite being “married” to others only compounds the casual views of millions about the vows.
