Here, in the second exclusive extract from his memoir, he recalls how Benedict and Francis emerged in response to the Church’s differing needs I  know Rome pretty well. It can occasionally be a place of agitation and heightened emotion. But nothing prepared me for the extraordinary ferment that seemed to have seized the city when I arrived on 4 April 2005.
