The bankside willows were green, the poplars just coming into leaf. The water sang its way under the bridge. As I walked along the beck, minnows shoaled in the shallows, and above the pools mayflies formed a swirling blizzard. Spring was days from tumbling into young summer – the height of the year. From time to time a little splash showed where a brown trout had risen for the mayflies.
