Alice Walker’s 1982 ground-breaking novel The Color Purple made her the first black woman to win the Pulitzer Prize for Fiction. The book has gone on to become part of the twentieth-century literary canon, taught in schools and universities. Steven Spielberg adapted it for the cinema in 1985, and in 2005 the story became a successful Broadway musical. Now, a new film version has been produced by Spielberg, Oprah Winfrey, Scott Sanders and Quincy Jones.
