Father Ted has a trio of Catholic priests, Fathers Ted Crilly, Dougal McGuire and Jack Hackett, in quite another world, a Celtic twilight of surreal visual jokes and strong knock-about comedy. It was established firmly in a Catholic setting which could risk, as The Vicar of Dibley rarely did, humour at the expense of the eccentricities of the faith. So much so that I watched the final credits with particular care to make sure the programme, set on an island off the coast of Ireland, had indeed been made for British television.
