To his critics, Pope Francis is a dangerous radical trying to break with centuries of church doctrine, while to others he is not moving fast enough in ditching some of the old rules. Both sides are missing the point. The 80-year-old Jesuit Pope is less interested in enforcing change from above than in opening up ways for church teaching to develop organically. Reforms should start at the bottom and work their way up – not the other way round.
