The Living Spirit and Liturgical Calendar

31 July 2025, The Tablet

The eye of the heart must be healed, and all impurities within it cleaned out, if we are to see God. As God humbled himself by becoming flesh in the Incarnation, we must humble ourselves, making ourselves available to God, by stripping away the distractions that obstruct us from loving him. In the incarnation, Jesus Christ shared in the experience of being human, uniting the human and Divine, so that we might return to God.
ST AUGUSTINE
FROM 15 DAYS OF PRAYER WITH ST AUGUSTINE, EDITED BY JAIME GARCIA (NEW CITY PRESS, 2013)

During the time immediately before and quite some time after my conversion I … thought that leading a religious life meant giving up all earthly things and having one’s mind fixed on divine things only. Gradually, however, I learnt that other things are expected of us in this world… I even believe that the deeper someone is drawn to God, the more he has to “get beyond himself” in this sense, that is, go into the world and carry divine life into it.
ST TERESA BENEDICTA OF THE CROSS (EDITH STEIN)
FROM THE HIDDEN LIFE: COLLECTED WORKS OF EDITH STEIN (ICS PUBLICATIONS, 1992)

And this is Jesus our true Mother by nature, by virtue of our first creation; and he is also our true Mother by grace, through taking our human nature. All the loving activity, and all that is implicit in the notion of the very best kind of motherhood has been appropriated to the Second Person …
I understood that there are three ways of looking at the motherhood in God: the first is rooted in the fact of our nature’s making; the second is taking of our nature – and this is the start of the motherhood of grace; the third is that motherhood of working – and in this activity the same grace is spread forth all over everything, everlasting in its length and breadth and height and depth. And this all springs from his one love.
