A real pilgrim going to Jerusalem leaves house and lands, wife and children, and strips himself of all his possessions that he may go easily on his way without hindrance. In the same way, if you wish to be a spiritual pilgrim, you must strip yourself of all your possessions, good works as well as bad, you must put them all behind you, and make yourself so poor in spirit that you rest in no work of your own, but are always desiring the grace of greater love and are always seeking the spiritual presence of Jesus … It is for this alone that you were created.
