The Catholic Church has been challenged to condemn so-called “gay conversion therapy” after the Prime Minister, Theresa May, announced that her Government was banning the controversial practice.

In an initiative promoted by the former Archbishop of Canterbury, Lord (Rowan) Williams of Oystermouth, more than 50 bishops of the Church of England have signed a statement condemning the human rights abuses perpetrated by the regime in Tehran and its treatment of Iran’s religious minorities.

Safeguarding is likely to become an area in which the Catholic Church works more closely with the Church of England, with an independently run telephone helpline for victims as the probable first step in the process, writes Joanna Moorhead.
