The leader of the Vatican’s doctrinal congregation sought to play down expectations about the possibility of female deacons today, arguing that a commission set up by Pope Francis was focussed on their historical role in the early Church rather than on ordination.  

It cannot be healthy when members of a household, including the household of the faith, are forbidden from talking about certain topics.

In a letter addressed to Cardinal Reinhard Marx, President of the German Episcopal Conference, Archbishop Luis Ladaria, the Prefect of the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith, says the Pope has ruled against publishing a contested German bishops' document that would loosen restrictions on giving communion to Protestants
