It is 175 years since the Catholic Hierarchy, restored in 1850, made the decision to prioritise the education of all as an integral part of their mission to the rapidly growing Catholic communities of England and Wales. Summed up in the aphorism ‘schools before churches’, school buildings were often the first to be constructed, providing visible points of community access to both learning and liturgy. St Mary’s Training College was founded as the direct result of that decision, since the bishops also recognised that Catholic schools required well-trained professional schoolteachers.
