Christ of the streets

The popularity and reach of Corpus Christi processions, at least in Britain and Ireland, has declined in recent years. A proper understanding of the feast and thoughtful preparation could reverse this trend The 1932 Eucharistic Congress was probably the high point of Irish Catholicism in the twentieth century. After Mass in Phoenix Park, a million-strong eucharistic procession made its way to the centre of Dublin, where Benediction was given on O’Connell Bridge. This act of eucharistic devotion probably inspired or at least helped develop the local processions in the towns and villages of Ireland, most of which began in those years and continue, in some shape, to this day.
