Strange petitions
Some viewers who watched Donald Trump’s inauguration as President of the United States on BBC Television with subtitles were surprised to read New York Cardinal Timothy Dolan praying: “No one wants you here. Just shut it, yeah?”

As the camera cut to outgoing President Barack Obama, the subtitles reportedly read: “Oi! Leave him alone!”

Cardinal Dolan was then captioned as saying: “Look, if you ain’t seen Sasha, just do one, yeah?” Astute viewers took to social media to point out that the network had displayed subtitles for the popular children’s programme The Dumping Ground over the live feed.

A spokesperson for the BBC said the issues may have been localised, adding: “We have not found any evidence or had other feedback from viewers that our main output covering the inauguration was subtitled incorrectly.”
