Drawing conclusions
Long-time readers of The Tablet will know him for his fond, if sometimes gently mocking, caricatures of Catholic life. Now cartoonist Jonathan Pugh has tackled the nation’s annual attempt at self-improvement in a collection of 52 witty drawings. Pugh’s New Year’s Resolutions, published in hardback in November by Short Books (£9.99), depicts characters who inhabit “an unfashionable world”.

“A world of wobbly waistlines, sloping shoulders and sagging jowls, of unused gym memberships, final demands, lost car keys, cold calls and intermittent wi-fi, wine stains on the carpet and crumbs down the sofa ... and broken resolutions,” Pugh, who is the pocket cartoonist for the Daily Mail, explains in its introduction. “My world, in truth, and I wouldn’t want it any other way,” he adds.
