Wrong trousers
Given the swelteringly hot temperatures in Rome for the canonisation of Mother Teresa on Sunday, the new British Ambassador to the Holy See, Sally Axworthy, must have breathed a sigh of relief that she has yet to present her credentials to Pope Francis.

As a result it spared her from wearing the heavy, woollen official diplomatic uniform which is expected of ambassadors by the Holy See on major occasions.

Axworthy is to become the first female British ambassador to wear the outfit overseas when she presents her credentials later this month. Hers will be a trouser suit with braid, plus a tricorn hat and a sword. The Foreign Office first introduced diplomatic uniforms for women in 2013 as a mark of equality.
