Squaring the circle


 
How do you square the circle as a politician seeking to appeal to both Catholic and secular voters? Labour leadership hopeful Andy Burnham made an attempt this week in a two-part interview with the Huffington Post.“I’m Catholic by upbringing, but I’m not particularly religious now,” he explained. “My kids go to a Catholic school, so I still believe in the values and the grounding it gives you.” At the same time, he stressed that he found it “hurtful” when people accused him of lacking commitment to gay rights.
