Faith following love


 
As Graham Greene did with Catholicism, the late actor Omar Sharif converted (for him it was to Islam) – and adopted his new name – in order to marry the woman he loved.She was Egyptian actress Faten Hamama, who died relatively unheralded outside her own country earlier this year. Sharif, who died last week, had been born Michel Demitri Chalhoub, to a Melkite Greek Catholic family from Lebanon. In the late 1980s, while visiting London to take part in a bridge competition, the Dr Zhivago star astonished a young British journalist and amateur bridge player by announcing that he would join him for Sunday morning Mass in Soho.
