The dean and chapter of Durham is going to great lengths to keep its cathedral free to enter despite having felt the squeeze in recent years (see Jonathan Wright’s book review, page 23). Its £11.4-million Open Treasure project also aims to fund the conversion of the fourteenth-century Great Kitchen into a climate-controlled environment for displaying the relics of St Cuthbert next year. Its efforts have been boosted by the sum paid by Warner Bros for allowing scenes in the first two
