While Pope Francis appears to favour English priests, following his appointment of one as his Foreign Minister, Cardinal Wilfrid Napier of Durban has expressed his concern about how much England has changed since the days of Catholic persecution.  Cardinal Napier tweeted: “500 yrs ago men crossed the Channel, became priests, returned to certain persecution & martyrdom! Yet they continued!”He went on: “Today it’s nearly impossible to imagine men of that age daring to approach, let alone enter, a Church! What’s happened to Mother England?”In reply, one Mark Lambert said the problem was that the “faith hasn’t been taught here for 40 years”, adding that bishops are afraid of upsetting the Establishment.
