Exhibitions, talks, study days, retreats and conferences are among the events taking place to mark the fifth centenary of the birth of St Teresa of Avila. The celebrations open with a Mass at the Carmelite priory church in Kensington Church Street, central London (above), at 7 p.m. on Wednesday. Sister Mary of St Joseph, the prioress of the Carmelite monastery in Notting Hill, told us that sisters from Carmels in Ware, Quidenham and Wolverhampton will be spending the night before the service with her community. “The sisters have been encouraged to attend one event, and several have chosen this Mass,” she told us, although she will not be joining them. “I’m attending the one event I’m least interested in,” she explained. “It’s an academ
