Banner appeal


 
Last week, we reported on Cardinal Henry Manning’s role as the mediator of the Great London Dock Strike of 1889 and influencer of Pope Leo XIII’s encyclical on Catholic Social Teaching, Rerum Novarum.But, while a Mass at the parish in the Royal Docks in east London tomorrow is celebrating the 125th anniversary of the dockers’ return to work, the banner that told the story of the cardinal’s involvement with the strike (and which featured on our front cover) has not been released for the celebration. This is because the three-metre-square object is in such a damaged state, it cannot be moved from its home at the People’s History Museum, Manchester. The museum has now started fund-raising for the banner’s conservation with a £15,000 appeal. Contact c
