‘The ultimate art gig’ put on hold


 
The mosaics in Westminster Cathedral look as if they will remain unfinished after the ­project to complete them has been put on hold, following the death last year of the most recent architect, Mark Fisher (pictured), tasked with covering the vast areas of remaining undecorated brickwork.For years, raw bricks have been a feature of the mother church in England and Wales, perhaps in keeping with this current era of austerity and in any event much loved by many of its regulars.But Fisher – best-known for his rock-music stages and, inter alia, the Beijing Olympics opening and closing ceremonies – had a plan to finish the job after a feasibility study to complete the ceiling mosaics was commissioned by Cardinal Vincent Nichols.
