WHEN LONDONER George Stack was appointed Archbishop of Cardiff, there were several commentators – including the editor of The Tablet – who called on him to learn Welsh. At the time, he said he was open to this “legitimate request”, although he made no commitment. We can now report that the archbishop, who has been in the post for almost three years, is going to learn Welsh. He told us that in July he will join six of his seminarians – one is a transitional deacon – on the month-long course in Cardiff to learn the notoriously difficult language.
