The good thief


 
There was an unusual choice of gospel reading at Dom Sebastian Moore’s requiem Mass, held in the abbey church at Downside last week. But Luke’s account of the two criminals executed with Jesus arguing among themselves while he hung between them on the Cross struck Abbot Aidan Bellenger as “singularly appropriate”. As he explained in his eulogy: “Sebastian thought that every time and every place was an appropriate occasion for discourse.” Current and former Downside pupils were among the many mourners for Dom Sebastian, who died this month at the age of 96. “You left his classes with a wonderful love of language and a thirst for more knowledge but probably with little chance of passing an examination,” Abbot Aidan explained.
