Getting people interested in your poetry is difficult enough and probably even harder if the poems have a religious bent. But Michael Symmons Roberts, described as a “religious poet for a secular age”, has bucked the trend after winning the Costa Poetry Book of the Year for the second time. The award means the book goes on the shortlist for the Costa Book of the Year prize.The 50-year-old poet, who was received into the Church and is a contributor to The Tablet, won the £5,000 award for Drysalter, a collection of 150 poems. The title is a reference to the psalter – the number of poems corresponds with the number of psalms in the Bible – while a drysalter is defined a dealer in dyes, gums, drugs, oils, pickles and tinned meats.
