New year, new role


 
John McCaffrey, who helped fund-raise for Pope Benedict XVI’s British visit and more recently was the Labour Party’s fund-raising director, has a new role.McCaffrey, who helped secure a US$230 million (£140m) donation from Bill Gates for Cambridge University, has joined the George Institute for Global Health in Oxford as director of global development. The institute is a medical-research enterprise working to combat preventable diseases across the world. Established in Australia, it has offices in India and China as well as the UK.McCaffrey has good links with senior prelates going back to his time as a Cambridge University student, when he interviewed a future Pope – then Cardinal Joseph Ratzinger – for the student newspaper, Varsity.
