Appeal to the stars


 
A North country parish church is hoping to tap into an unlikely, but rich, seam of connections to raise more than £250,000 for a new roof and interior refurbishments.The Church of the Holy Spirit, in the old wool town of Heckmondwike, West Yorkshire, claims ties with Apollo astronauts, the US Ryder Cup golf team and G.K. Chesterton, thanks to the connections of two of its former priests.Its first, Fr John O’Connor, counted the likes of Hilaire Belloc and artist Sir Edward Burne-Jones among his friends. He was the model for the crime-solving priest Father Brown, created by his friend the author G.K. Chesterton.
