The overseas disability charity, CBM, will be posting live updates on social media throughout September charting the progress of a young man in Cameroon as he prepares for life changing surgery to remove cataracts from his eyes that have left him almost completely blind.

Cataracts, which cause half of the world's blindness, have left Desire, aged 28, almost completely blind. He is no longer able to work as a carpenter or support his wife and four children.

The operation costs as little as £24, an unaffordable amount for Desire. CBM have funded the operation and will be posting regular updates and Facebook live video clips as Desire prepares for his operation on 19 September. Following the operation, followers on social media will be able to witness him seeing his family for the first time in real time.

The Christian charity, CBM, helps  over 30 million people living with and at risk of disabilities in more than 60 countries worldwide each year. Around 36 million people around the world are blind, while 217 million are visually impaired. The vast majority live in developing countries. Around half of all blindness is caused by cataract, where the lens of the eye becomes cloudy. Cataracts can be treated with simple surgery, which costs as little as £24 for an adult or £95 for a child. CBM restores sight in the poorest places of the world by tackling eye diseases, training doctors and health care workers and carrying out sight-restoring surgeries - including the removal of cataracts.
