Mexico’s president-elect Andrés Manuel López Obrador (Amlo) has committed to convening experts from around the world to begin a reconciliation process to address the high levels of drugs violence in the country.
He proposed a series of forums before he takes office on 1 December. During his campaign he promised to invite Pope Francis to participate. Loretta Ortíz, a member of his transition team, said on 14 July that Francis has confirmed he will participate “virtually” and will send two expert advisers to Mexico. The forums will be held in 40 locations around the country, particularly areas that have seen high levels of violence.
