Australian Jesuits win Catholic Press Association awards

Richard Leonard

Two Australian Jesuits and regular Tablet contributors, Richard Leonard and Gerald O'Collins have been honoured at the annual Catholic Press Association Awards in the US.

Fr O'Collins and former Tablet editor John Wilkins won second place in the Liturgy section for Lost in Translation, which unfavourably compares the 2010 English translation of the Roman Missal introduced by the Vatican with the 1998 translation approved by 11 conferences of English-speaking bishops -- the "Missal that never was". It is published by Liturgical Press.

The judges said: "This is a well-reasoned, concise argument for a truly vernacular translation of the Roman Missal. The argument is based on principles as old as those proposed by St Jerome and on recent ecclesiastical history from the Second Vatican Council to the most recent translation of the Roman Missal into English."

In the Spirituality category Fr Leonard also took second place for What Does It All Mean?: A Guide to Being More Faithful, Hopeful, and Loving, published by Paulist Press.

The citation read: "The task of our lives is to recognise our goodness and then attempt to live a little better. This book offers a pathway to meditating on this journey to find the meaning of our life. This would be a beneficial book for anyone struggling to find their way or for those who try to bring clarity to others about the purpose of their particular life."
