Actor Jude Law will be back on the screen for 'The New Pope', a follow-up series to the critically-acclaimed 'The Young Pope'.

The new mini-series, written by Paolo Sorrentino, is not a sequel, and and it is unclear whether Jude Law will play the role of Danny Belardo (Pope Pius XIII) whose fate was left hanging at the end of The Young Pope's 10th and final episode.

Oscar nominee John Malkovich will also play a part in the new series, though no details on his role have been disclosed.

The original series followed Jude Law's Lenny Belardo, as he became the first American pope.

Aired on Sky in October 2016 and on HBO in January 2017, the hugely popular, Young Pope, was shown in 150 countries.

The filming for the follow-up series will start in Italy in autumn.
